At Kogaion Academy, our kids jiu-jitsu and judo program in Arlington, VA builds confidence, self-discipline, and respect in a fun, supportive environment. Through structured training, your child will develop life skills that go beyond the mats, setting them up for success in all areas of life. EVERY class is focused on the three pillars of 1) Safety, 2) Progress and 3) Connection.
Kids BJJ (5-7 years old)
This is our youngest age group and a great time to start your child on their jiu-jitsu journey. The curriculum is centered around exercises and games that will introduce our youngest students to the basic movements and core values of jiu jitsu.
Program Goals

- Develop physical awareness and coordination
- Build strength, speed and balance with specific exercises
- Increase the situational and positional sparring
- Gain skills for success in school, friendships, and life!

Youth BJJ (8-12 years old)
This is the older age group in our kids program and is an important transitional phase for them in school, on the mats, and in life. We aim to develop the confidence and skill set they will need to excel and continue to grow into teenager-hood and adulthood.
Program Goals:
- Establish strong and technical foundation
- Develop sparring skills
- Encourage teamwork
- Develop self-control
- Use goal setting as a method for self improvement
We will continue to reinforce:
- Good behavior and ability to follow instructions
- Ability to focus in a group setting
- Basic jiu-jitsu positions and techniques
- Building confidence and communication skills

Juniors Judo (all ages, 5-12)
Our judo program teaches kids the art of controlled throws and takedowns while building confidence, discipline, and resilience. Designed for ages 5-12, this program emphasizes technique, balance, and strategy in a fun and supportive environment. Through structured training, students learn how to safely and effectively take an opponent to the ground while developing essential life skills that extend beyond the dojo.
Program Goals:
- Understand fundamental judo techniques, including throws, breakfalls, and positional control.
- Develop balance, coordination, and body awareness
- Instill confidence, discipline, and respect
- Become a team player
- Problem solving through live training

FAQ:
Observing: You are welcome to observe the class from our lobby! We also encourage you to join the adult's classes many of which happen concurrently with our kids classes across the hall :) Many parents who train have said that they have bonded more with their kids over common goals and activities.
Age requirement: If you child is younger than 5 and is interested in joining, please bring them for a trial class and we can assess their readiness on a case to case basis. If your child is 13 or older, we encourage them to join the adult class.
How to stripes and belt promotions work?
Jiu-Jitsu: Every new student starts at white belt and will earn stripes and belts based on their attendance, effort and technical progression. It generally takes 2-3 month per stripe in the early stages of this program and around 8-12 months to go from white belt to grey & white belt. It normally takes one year to go from grey & white belt to grey belt. Parents can also ask the program's instructors for more guidance on the promotion system if needed.
Judo: Every new student starts at white belt and will be promoted by belt based on attendance, effort and technical progression. It generally takes 8 months to 1 year to go from white to yellow belt. Parents can also ask the program's instructors for more guidance on the promotion system if needed.
